Subject Association - day 3

 Subject Association - Day 3

The third day of the Subject Association celebrations was observed on October 25th in remembrance of the death anniversary of Sylvia Plath, one of the most influential poets of the twentieth century. The programme aimed to revisit her powerful writings, understand her confessional style, and explore the relevance of her works in relation to mental health awareness. Plath’s poetry and prose, rooted in themes of identity, emotional struggle, and existential conflict, formed the central focus of the day.

The programme was anchored by Sophia, who introduced the theme and guided the session with a reflective and engaging approach. The opening session began with an introduction to Sylvia Plath by Shamna, who briefly discussed her life, literary career, and confessional style of writing. Fathima presented the New Word of the Day, enriching students’ literary vocabulary, while Shermi delivered a news update highlighting recent studies and interpretations of Plath’s works. The Thought for the Day, shared by Akshara, featured a quote by Sylvia Plath and reflected on its emotional depth and relevance. The session concluded with a pledge led by Mary, emphasizing mental health awareness, empathy, and the healing power of literature.

A major segment of the programme was dedicated to the analysis of Sylvia Plath’s notable works. Shahina discussed the poem Tulips, focusing on themes of illness and isolation, while Alen analyzed Lady Lazarus, highlighting its imagery of death, rebirth, and personal resilience. Mary examined Daddy, exploring its emotional intensity and symbolic language, and Shereena presented an overview of The Bell Jar, connecting its themes of mental illness and societal pressure to Plath’s own life. The session concluded with Saafi’s discussion on Ariel, emphasizing themes of transformation, freedom, and artistic brilliance.

An interactive cognitive activity titled The Knot Challenge was conducted to symbolize the complexity of mental struggles. Participants attempted to untie a knot without letting go, representing emotional conflicts and the importance of perseverance and perspective. The activity encouraged reflection on resilience, awareness, and the need for support during difficult times.

The programme concluded with a meaningful discussion on the lasting relevance of Sylvia Plath’s works and the importance of addressing mental health through literature. Day 3 of the Subject Association celebrations proved to be both intellectually enriching and emotionally reflective, serving as a fitting tribute to Sylvia Plath’s literary legacy while deepening students’ understanding of poetry, mental well-being, and self-expression.
