 Weekly Reflection – Internship Phase 1 (Week 1: July 14–18, 2025)

School: GHSS Nedungolam

My teaching internship began on 14th July 2025 at GHSS Nedungolam. I reached the school by 9 a.m. and, along with fellow trainees, met the school principal, Mrs. Susan Varghese. After the formal introduction, I was guided to my subject teacher, Darshana Ma’am, who provided me with helpful suggestions and instructions for beginning my class. I was allotted Class 9A, and my first period was scheduled right on the first day, which marked an energetic and positive start to my internship journey.

I began teaching the chapter “Debts of Gratitude” and continued with it throughout the week. I made conscious efforts to engage the students through simplified explanations, questions, and classroom activities designed to enhance their comprehension. As the class was a Malayalam medium section, I encountered some challenges in communication. Some students found it difficult to follow English, which encouraged me to adopt a bilingual approach and adjust my teaching strategies to suit their learning needs.

Throughout the week, I had English classes during the first period, which gave a consistent and structured start to each day. I also received multiple substitution periods, mainly in Class 8. These experiences gave me a broader exposure to diverse classroom environments and helped me understand the dynamics of classroom management better.

On the very first day of my internship, I also received a substitution during the last period for a PT class in 8A. To make the session meaningful and enjoyable, I organized a few simple mini games that encouraged participation and interaction among the students. This opportunity helped me build an early connection with the students outside of the academic setting and observe their group behaviour and energy levels.

The first four days were active with teaching and reflection, while Friday was quieter as students were not present. Nevertheless, I made use of the time for planning and signed the attendance for the day.

Overall, this week laid a strong foundation for my internship. It gave me the confidence to manage a classroom independently, adapt to students' needs, and build rapport with both learners and staff. I look forward to deepening my understanding and enhancing my teaching practices in the coming weeks.
