Conscientization programme

 Conscientization programme

Topic: Importance of Clean Drinking Water

Date: 26 September 2025

Class: 8B

Period: 7th Period

Conducted as part of the B.Ed. Programme

Introduction

As part of our B.Ed. internship programme, we conducted a conscientization session for Class 8B on the topic “Importance of Clean Drinking Water.” The main purpose of this programme was to create awareness among students about the significance of consuming safe, clean water and to help them understand how contaminated water can seriously harm health. To make the session engaging, we began with a simple comparison activity—asking students to imagine which glass of water they would choose to drink. This helped them think critically about purity, cleanliness, and hygiene even before the session formally began.

Need and Significance

Conducting a conscientization programme on the importance of clean drinking water is essential in today’s context, where water sources are increasingly exposed to pollution and contamination. Many students are unaware of how water becomes polluted through sources like industrial waste, plastic disposal, agricultural chemicals, and poor sanitation practices. By educating them at an early age, we help them build lifelong habits of choosing safe water, protecting water sources, and understanding the link between water quality and overall well-being. Such awareness empowers students to make informed decisions, adopt healthy practices, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.

Objectives

To make students aware of the importance of consuming clean and safe drinking water.

To explain how water gets polluted and the common ways contamination occurs.

To help students identify the health risks associated with drinking impure water.

To encourage students to follow simple daily practices to ensure water hygiene.

To motivate learners to take responsibility for protecting water sources in their community.

To develop critical thinking through visual examples, discussions, and real-life situations.

Procedure / Description of the Session

The session began with an interactive activity where I presented two imaginary glasses of water—one clean and one visibly dirty—and asked students which one they would choose. This sparked curiosity and opened a discussion on what “clean water” truly means. I then introduced the concept of water pollution, explaining how water becomes contaminated through human activities such as dumping waste, improper sewage disposal, and irresponsible usage of chemicals.

Using slides and visual examples, we showed the consequences of drinking polluted water and discussed simple purification methods like boiling, filtering, and proper storage.

My fellow teacher trainee and I also highlighted the importance of community responsibility in safeguarding clean water sources. Students participated actively and shared their own experiences, making the session meaningful and relatable.

Reflection

Conducting this conscientization programme was a valuable learning experience for me. Beginning the session with the “glass of water” activity helped capture students’ attention immediately, and their enthusiastic responses showed that the strategy was effective. While explaining how water becomes polluted, I realized how important it is to simplify environmental concepts for young learners. The interactive discussions allowed students to express their thoughts openly, and many of them showed genuine concern about water safety. Overall, the session strengthened my confidence as a teacher, improved my presentation skills, and gave me insights into how awareness programmes can positively influence student thinking.

Conclusion

The conscientization programme on the Importance of Clean Drinking Water was successful in promoting awareness, responsibility, and practical understanding among Class 8B students. It helped them recognize the value of safe water, understand the dangers of contamination, and learn simple ways to ensure hygiene. The session also encouraged students to think critically and take personal responsibility for healthy water practices. Overall, this programme not only achieved its objectives but also reinforced the idea that safeguarding clean water is a shared responsibility and an essential step toward building a healthier and more sustainable future.
