Innovative Work report : Prefix–Suffix Rotating Wheel
Innovative Teaching Aid: Prefix–Suffix Rotating Wheel
Overview of the Innovative Model
The Prefix–Suffix Rotating Wheel is an innovative, hands-on teaching aid designed to make the concept of word formation more interactive and engaging. I used this model in class on 23 September 2025 while teaching the topic Prefixes and Suffixes. The model transforms an abstract grammar concept into a visual and experiential learning activity.
Description of the Model
The model consists of a circular rotating wheel made using simple classroom materials. Around the outer edge of the wheel, different prefixes and suffixes are clearly displayed. At the centre of the wheel, there is a small flap or door-like opening.
Inside this flap, example words are written. These words change based on the prefix or suffix the wheel points to. When the wheel is rotated, it randomly stops at a particular affix. The learner then opens the flap to check how that affix modifies the meaning of a base word.
Classroom Use and Learning Process
During the class, students were invited to rotate the wheel one by one. Once the wheel stopped at a prefix or suffix, they were encouraged to:
Predict the meaning of the word formed
Open the flap to verify their answer
Discuss how the affix changed the meaning or grammatical form of the base word
This process turned grammar learning into a discovery-based activity, keeping students curious and actively involved.
Educational Value of the Model
Affixes are often perceived as difficult because they require learners to understand both structure and meaning. This rotating wheel simplifies the process by allowing learners to see and experience word formation.
The model helps students to:
Understand how prefixes and suffixes alter word meanings
Improve vocabulary and spelling skills
Strengthen confidence in using new words in speaking and writing
Connect grammatical rules wit h real examples
