School-Based Activity : Ozone Day Celebration – 16 September 2025

 School-Based Activity : Ozone Day Celebration – 16 September 2025

Introduction

School-based activities are an integral part of teacher education, as they allow trainee teachers to apply their classroom learning in real-life situations. These programmes help in developing communication skills, creativity, and a sense of responsibility among both teachers and students. As part of our B.Ed. programme, we conducted a school-based activity on September 16, 2025, to observe World Ozone Day. The session was held during the fifth period in Class 8B (1:15 pm – 1:50 pm) and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and the need to protect it.

Need and Significance

Environmental education has become essential in today's world, and schools play a crucial role in building eco-friendly values among the younger generation. The ozone layer acts as a protective shield for life on Earth, and its depletion poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. Conducting an Ozone Day programme helps students understand this global issue in a simple and meaningful way. The activity encouraged critical thinking, promoted environmental responsibility, and inspired students to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives.

Objectives

The objectives of the programme were:

1. To create awareness about the importance of the ozone layer.

2. To explain the causes and effects of ozone layer depletion.

3. To introduce students to global efforts like the Montreal Protocol.

4. To promote environmental responsibility among students.

5. To encourage sustainable and eco-friendly behaviour.

6. To engage students through multimedia and interactive activities.

7. To strengthen classroom participation and collaborative learning.

Programme Report

The Ozone Day programme in Class 8B began with an inaugural address by Mrs. Simi, Head of the Social Science Department. She gave a brief yet meaningful introduction on the relevance of Ozone Day and highlighted why protecting the ozone layer is crucial for the survival of all living beings. Her words helped set a positive tone for the session and prepared the students for the activities ahead.

We started the programme by presenting a chart showing the different layers of the atmosphere. I explained each layer and specifically pointed out where the ozone layer is located. The visual aid helped the students understand the concept clearly and created a strong foundation for the next parts of the session.

To enhance their understanding further, we showed a video on ozone, its depletion, and preventive measures. The visuals captured the attention of the learners instantly. Meenu explained the key points from the video, helping students connect the scientific information with real-life implications. This combination of visual and verbal explanation made the topic more engaging and easier to remember.

Following this, we conducted a PowerPoint presentation to give the students a deeper and more structured understanding. The slides covered topics such as What is Ozone Day, the significance of the ozone layer, causes and effects of its depletion, and ways to prevent further damage. The presentation was jointly handled by Meenu and myself, and we took turns explaining each slide. Students participated actively by asking questions and sharing their thoughts, making the session interactive and meaningful.

To conclude the programme, we conducted a quiz competition related to Ozone Day. The students responded enthusiastically and showcased a good understanding of the topic. The quiz helped reinforce their learning and added a fun, competitive element that kept them fully engaged.

Reflection

This activity was a valuable learning experience for me as a trainee teacher. It strengthened my confidence in classroom management and taught me the importance of using a variety of teaching aids to make abstract concepts more understandable. Working with Meenu improved my teamwork and communication skills, while the interactive elements of the programme showed me the impact of student-centered learning. Most importantly, this activity reminded me that a teacher’s role extends beyond teaching—it also involves inspiring students to care for the world around them.

Conclusion

The Ozone Day celebration in Class 8B was effective, engaging, and informative. Through charts, videos, presentations, and a quiz, the students developed a clear understanding of the importance of the ozone layer and the need to protect it. Their active participation reflected the success of the programme. Overall, this school-based activity not only enriched the students’ knowledge but also contributed significantly to my growth as a future teacher.
